Capturing Perseverance: Filming Music Videos in Kangiqsujuaq and Kangirsuk

Over the past two weeks, I had the incredible opportunity to work in the northern communities of Kangiqsujuaq and Kangirsuk, filming music videos for Perseverance Week on behalf of Esuma.

This project was a unique and rewarding experience, allowing me to collaborate with talented individuals like Jacky Levare and, most importantly, the students in both communities.

The goal of the project was to create original songs and music videos with the schoolchildren, giving them a platform to express their thoughts, experiences, and creativity while reflecting the resilience required to live in the North. Each video was designed to capture their reality—the harsh cold, the relentless wind, and the perseverance it takes to push forward despite these challenges.

A Week in Kangiqsujuaq

Kangiqsujuaq was the first stop, and from the moment we arrived, it was clear how much the community valued creativity and storytelling. The students, despite being young, showed an incredible ability to put their emotions into words and music. Together, we brainstormed themes, wrote lyrics, and composed melodies that spoke to their unique experiences.

One of the most memorable parts of the week was shooting outdoors in the frigid temperatures. The kids were unfazed by the cold, embracing it as part of their daily life. They ran through snow-covered landscapes, danced with excitement, and took pride in sharing their home through music and visuals. Every shot we captured felt raw and authentic—moments of joy, determination, and connection.

Filming in Kangirsuk

The following week in Kangirsuk brought new challenges but also new opportunities. The wind here was relentless, making outdoor shooting more difficult, but the students remained enthusiastic and eager to bring their vision to life. They wanted their video to highlight their deep connection to the land and the strength of their community.

Working with them, we crafted a song that blended traditional influences with modern beats, creating a sound that felt both contemporary and deeply rooted in their culture. The filming process involved capturing daily life in Kangirsuk, and the breathtaking Arctic landscapes that define this part of the world.

The Impact of the Project

Beyond the final videos, what stood out the most was the confidence and pride that emerged in these young artists. For many, this was their first experience with songwriting and filmmaking, and watching them grow more comfortable in front of the camera was inspiring. They weren’t just participants; they were storytellers, performers, and creators of something deeply meaningful.

This project reinforced the importance of giving young people the tools and encouragement to share their voices. It also highlighted the resilience of these communities, where extreme conditions don’t deter creativity but rather fuel it.

Looking Ahead

As we wrap up post-production on these videos, I’m excited to share them with the world. These projects are more than just music videos; they are reflections of perseverance, culture, and identity. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this experience and to have worked with such amazing young artists.

Stay tuned for more updates, behind-the-scenes footage, and the official release of the videos.

A huge thank you to Esuma, Jacky Levare, the students, teachers, and everyone who made this possible. This is just the beginning of many more stories to tell.
